Just now, I faced an issue with my site, I wanted to install the SSL certificate to my site and so changed the site URL from http to https and saved the settings in the dashboard settings and as soon as I did it, I encountered an error saying the URL has too many redirects.
I was unable to go back to the dashboard and it was frustrating, So I have relied on my little know it all friend google to find a quick fix for this and here is what I found.
If you have access to the site via FTP, then this method will help you quickly get a site back up and running, if you changed those values incorrectly.
1. FTP to the site, and get a copy of the active theme’s functions.php file. You have to edit it in a simple text editor and upload it back to the site.
2. Add these two lines to the file, immediately after the initial “<?php” line.[dt_code]update_option( ‘siteurl’, ‘http://example.com’ );
update_option( ‘home’, ‘http://example.com’ );[/dt_code]
Replace example with your domain name.
3. Replace the new file with functions.php file in the active themes folder and load the admin page for a couple of times.
Voila the site is back up.
It is important that you remove the file/lines depending on the changes you have made after the site is up and running again.
Hope this helps out.
